The story begins with Nobita buying a big rhinoceros beetle from a pet shop with his dad's money. He promises to take good care of it and names it Kibou (Hope). However, he soon realizes that he doesn't have enough space or food for it in his room. He asks Doraemon for help, who gives him a gadget that can create a mini forest in a bottle.
Nobita puts Kibou in the bottle forest along with some other insects he finds in his backyard. He then invites his friends Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo to see his new pet.
